Name: Hibiki Kohaku
Canon: BlazBlue
Canon Point: Act 2 of Hibiki's arcade, during the boss fight
Age: Approximately early twenties
History:
Hibiki comes from Kohaku family, which is one of Mutsuki branch families. The members of the family are trained in stealth arts and assassination. Their duty is to serve Mutsuki family which is one of twelve most important families that took part in the Dark War in one way or another. Very little is known about the training itself but proves to be undoubtedly effective on many occasions throughout the story. Most likely, at some point during the training, Hibiki met Kagura and while the exact circumstances of this meeting remain unknown, as a result, Hibiki became Kagura Mutsuki’s secretary later on. Apart from the training, Hibiki attended the Military Academy and is currently filling a position of a captain in Novus Orbis Librarium.

During the events of Chronophantasma, he’s helping Kagura Mutsuki with his plan of defeating the current Imperator Librarius (Izanami) and return the throne to the rightful successor, Homura Amanohokosaka. To do that, they need to cooperate with Sector Seven which is considered an adversary organization to Novus Orbis Librarium. Hibiki’s role is mostly to support his superior and fulfill his orders (such as escorting Jin Kisaragi to Kagura’s office in Ibukido or more mundane tasks like cooking for Kagura’s guests). While he doesn’t take part in the final battle with Izanami himself, its outcome affects the whole world—after defeating Giant: Takemikazuchi which Izanami summoned, she manages to turn it into an Embryo which serves as a sealed space which consists of multiple worlds. On top of that, it results in people losing their memories as they’re scattered.

In one of those worlds, Hibiki meets Nine the Phantom who brings his dream to attention, even though he’s convinced that he has no dream of his own and that his dreams are the same as Kagura’s. Apparently, he’s mistaken—Nine shows him the dream hidden deep in his heart: Hibiki's dream is to kill Kagura and to become an emotionless killing tool. When Nine shows him the vision of himself standing in his superior’s office, his uniform soaked in blood and cold body of Kagura at his feet, he’s deeply shaken and denies all of it. Whether it’s his true dream or not, Nine doesn’t explain that, but instead, she tells him that he needs to defeat Izanami in order to make his dream come true.
Personality:
Hibiki Kohaku, mostly known as Kagura Mutsuki’s right hand, is a person who’s incredibly loyal and who will get the work done in one way or another, as soon as it’s possible. At first glance, his loyalty towards Kagura defines him the most as a character since most of the time he’s shown while he’s carrying out various errands for his superior—starting with cooking through paperwork to missions that often require to be done fast and quiet (for instance, bringing Jin Kisaragi to Mutsuki’s office in Ibukido). While he’s not an utterly docile secretary and often gives snarky comments on Kagura’s behavior (usually when his boss is somewhere nearby, of course), Hibiki deeply admires him despite his faults and is honored to be of a help for the head of the Mutsuki family.

Or that’s what he thought before his meeting with Nine, at least. His shock upon seeing the vision of him assassinating the person he’s working for is no act and, to some extent, he’s disgusted that she’s using such illusions. However, as the time goes by, Hibiki begins to question himself—he was trained to be an assassin and yet he ended up walking a completely different path, after all. It only shows how absorbed he is with his work, or more generally, in everything else but himself. All this time, he’s been thinking that his wish is the same as Kagura’s, but a complete outsider manages to prove him wrong and sows the seeds of doubt. Repressing his feelings and thoughts leads him to ignoring Kagura’s orders even though Hibiki believes he’s acting accordingly to his superior’s will. In the end, Hibiki doesn’t get the chance to make his wish come true, so whether his admiration for Kagura is fake or not remains a mystery. Although given his impetuous reactions to other people suggesting him to kill his superior, there’s a chance that he wouldn’t follow his own dream, even though he can't exactly deny its existence.

That said, generally, Hibiki is anything but impetuous. Stoic at all times, he rarely snaps at other people (and when he does, expect the person to be hammered with his critique), even though he’s surrounded by rather sloppy people who can’t get their job done in a timely manner. Actually, he’s even said to be “the only reason any NOL admin work gets done in the city of Ibukido”, which speaks for itself. It doesn’t mean, however, that he doesn’t slip various critical remarks into the conversations. To be quite honest, he does that a lot, and even though they’re rather subtle most of the times, it doesn’t take a genius to catch up with what he meant.

At the same time, Hibiki can be really polite which is shown in the honorific language he uses and, obviously, in his behavior. He knows his place as a secretary and a captain of NOL and on top of that he’s also the type to follow procedures no matter what. Because of that, he’s strict towards others and won’t let private matters diffuse into work, which, to his dismay, his superior does at least once a day.

In conclusion, Hibiki is a character of many contradictions, especially if we take his relationship with Kagura Mutsuki into account. He’s both loyal to Kagura and yet there seems to be a seething murder intent hidden within him which is undoubtedly connected to his past and his training as an assassin. Most of the time, he remains silent and collected, although he doesn’t refrain from belittling the people who don’t carry out their duties as they’re expected to.

Abilities:
  • Drive: Double Chase
Hibiki's drive allows him to create a shadow clone of himself and to exchange positions with said clone.
  • Overdrive: Schwarz Reis
Once the overdrive is activated, the movement speed of the clones increases.
  • Stealth
Trained in arts of stealth and assassination, Hibiki can sneak up to someone completely unseen.
  • Combat skills
Hibiki is a skilled fighter whose weapons of choice are cutter-like dual swords. Here is an overview of his various attacks in-game.
  • Cooking
On top of that, he's an exquisite cook praised by other characters such as Rachel Alucard, for example. Some of the characters seem to know Hibiki from his cooking more than anything else and would like to taste it.
Strengths: Disciplined, confident, hardworking, stoic, reliable
Weaknesses: Strict, sharp-tongued, fearless, persistent, ruthless
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Not only Hibiki's wish is to become a tool, but as a person who worked under someone else's command he's rather well suited to be one, in terms of character as well.
Cause Of Death: Died in the midst of a fight with Izanami.

[Whether it's just a mere folly or genuine curiousness, Hibiki can't tell. And yet, he finds himself wandering around one of the many shrines. It's still early in the morning—dawn has just broken—so nobody is up and around yet. He didn't go on a stroll alone to seek anybody's companionship, after all.

His gaze flickers from one prayer to another; it's quite interesting how many of them are there and how different they are from each other. Good grades, health, love, friendship are just a few examples of what people wrote on the wooden plaques.]

They're probably not even giving their best, just hope that one of the gods flick their fingers and make whatever they want happen.

[That's one harsh opinion, but he doesn't quite understand the sentiment. Rather than wish for something, shouldn't they make an effort to achieve it on their own? This is how he does it, so it's not impossible. But there's a question lingering somewhere in the back of his mind:

"Are you entirely sure this is the only good method?"

Hibiki pushes the thought away, however, and fixes the collar of his cloak. As he's about to walk away, he notices one plaque on the ground where it most certainly shouldn't be. Once he picks it up, Hibiki starts looking for a good place to hang it on. Before that happens, though, his gaze wanders off to the words written on the wood.

Please, help my friend come back to health.

Hibiki sighs softly; it's definitely not one of those wishes you can make come true just by yourself, that much is clear.

The wooden plaque ends up in his pocket as he heads off to investigate the matter further. Whether his god will agree to intervene or not, Hibiki doesn't know that yet, but maybe if he's going to be persistent enough about it...

This is one of the things he's really good at, after all.]
